Information for Schools

Start an A.K.A. Science Program at your School or Organization
Operating A.K.A. Science at your school or organization is easy! Once you have decided to offer A.K.A. Science at your site, please contact our A.K.A. Science Program Coordinator. We will ask you to provide a main contact person with whom to communicate at your organization. We will work with that person to recruit class leaders from your community. Your organization's contact person will secure a room(s) for class(es), select class times, and assist with the student recruitment process. Additionally, we ask that your organization share all A.K.A. Science class information including completed registration forms and class rosters with us for reporting purposes. (Click here for a complete list of partnership expectations)

What will the program cost?
A.K.A. Science is supported by user fees and foundation support. We charge $60.00 per student per eight-week session to cover the cost of curriculum, supplies, Class Leader filing fees, training, registration, and evaluation. OHCC is dedicated to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate in A.K.A. Science. Scholarships are available to students who qualify. We ask that your organization support the program by providing classroom space and release time for the leader training as well as your organization’s assistance with the registration process.

In the fall of 2004, OHCC received a generous grant from the Portland Children’s Investment Fund to provide A.K.A. Science to all 4th through 8th grade students in SUN Schools within Portland city limits. As a result, we are able to offer classes to all students at the 4th-8th grade level in SUN Schools without charging a fee. (Click here for a list of eligible SUN Schools) A.K.A. Science at the K-3 level is supported by some SUN Schools. Please check with your school’s SUN Site Manager for more details.

Who sponsors A.K.A. Science?
A.K.A. Science is a program of OHCC. OHCC provides administrative, operational and training support for the program. The program materials are copyright protected properties owned by OHCC.

Schools provide release time so teachers can attend training. Parents support the program through user fees. And, generous corporate, governmental, organizational and individual sponsors assure that A.K.A. Science is available to any interested student, regardless of their financial situation.
