What is the HCOP Summer Academy?
HCOP Summer Academies are six-week programs designed to help students prepare for successfully entering and completing health professions college programs. There is a commuter academy for rising high school juniors at Linfield College-Portland Campus and a residential academy for graduated seniors at Pacific University in Forest Grove. Only 50 students are accepted into each academy.


When is HCOP Summer Academy?

HCOP Summer Academy for rising juniors will be held July 19th through August 27th, 2010. The academy will be held Monday through Friday, beginning at 9:00 am and ending at 4:00 pm. OHCC will provide transportation to and from Linfield College in Portland each day.

HCOP Summer Academy for graduated seniors will be held June 14th through July 23rd, 2010. The academy is residential and students will live at Pacific University in Forest Grove Monday through Thursday. Students will return home each weekend on Fridays after classes end. OHCC will provide transportation to and from Pacific University at the beginning and end of each week.


Who should apply for HCOP Summer Academy?
High school students with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 who are currently enrolled in their junior or senior year of high school are eligible. Students must either qualify for free/reduced lunch or have parents who have not obtained a two or four year college degree. Students must be either a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

What does HCOP Summer Academy cost?

The HCOP Program is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Health Professions. Both Summer Academies are free of charge to students. All expenses related to participation in the program (lunch, books, lab supplies, and all transportation) are covered. For the residential academy, room and board is also covered.

What will I do at HCOP Summer Academy?

Current juniors will take specially designed, integrated courses in College Math and Chemistry with a focus on health careers. Students will also participate in a college success strategies course and a cultural competency in workshop.

Current seniors will take Human Biology, Medical Terminology, and College Writing. All participants will have access to tutoring by college mentors during study labs. They will also participate in Friday Field Studies which may include work on a community service or health education project, job shadows, or field trips to colleges, universities, health facilities and cultural events.
