Open Health sponsors LASM FREE First Sunday on March 2

Open Health Care Clinic is proud to sponsor this exciting event featuring Dr. Rani Whitfield, our Chief Medical Officer and "Tha Hip Hop Doc," for his 2nd Annual Reading & Rhythm celebration! In addition to free museum admission and a discounted $5 rate for unlimited Irene W. Pennington Planetarium shows, the event will offer a family-friendly celebration of literacy and music. Highlights include live storytelling, music performances, and interactive activities designed to engage and inspire young readers.

In 2024, Louisiana’s 4th-grade reading rankings skyrocketed from 42nd to 16th in the nation, showcasing the impact of literacy initiatives. “The power of literacy is transforming lives in East Baton Rouge,” says Dr. Whitfield. “Seeing our 4th graders excel reminds us that reading is more than words—it’s the foundation for success. By combining rhythm and storytelling, we make learning fun, and when kids are engaged, they thrive. I hope this year’s event continues to build on that momentum!”

The event will feature:
1.
Live book readings & signings with Dr. Whitfield and his son, R.J., co-stars of RJ Did It!
2. A screening of the RJ Did It! music video, a fun visual storytelling experience for young readers
3. Special DJ sets showcasing Louisiana music by Maestro and DJ D.O.C. (Tha Hip Hop Doc)
4. Live performances by former members of the world-famous Human Jukebox
5. Health messages and interactive activities promoting literacy and wellness
6. Health screenings, vaccinations and education on Open Health’s wide range of services

March’s Free First Sunday sponsor, Open Health Care Clinic, will also be on-site, sharing its mission to provide high-quality medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare to all, regardless of insurance or income status. “Open Health envisions a future of well-being for the communities we serve,” says Dawn Beasley, Chief Operating Officer. “We are committed to expanding services, educational opportunities, and access to care. We are proud to partner with Dr. Whitfield and LASM on March 2nd, empowering visitors to make informed decisions about their health.”

Books will also be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, thanks to the generous support of the YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge City Council Member Cleve Dunn, and the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA).
